Our coal-fired power stations

One of the main technology challenges facing our sector is that of finding more energy efficient ways of using coal in order to tackle climate change and the growing scarcity of coal reserves. Viesgo has two coal-fired power plants, Los Barrios and Puente Nuevo, two flexible, efficient facilities with a total installed capacity of almost 1,000 MW and a production of 4.4 TWh.

Following the implementation of SCR, Los Barrios is now the most efficient plant in Spain and one of the most efficient in Europe, with a clear goal of operating with great flexibility. Puente Nuevo remains on course at such a relevant time as the present for energy transition.

Los Barrios

Los Barrios

The Los Barrios power plant, in the province of Cadiz, has installed capacity of 589 MW. Its advanced technology has been distinguished by the CNMC, Spain's energy regulator, as the second most efficient coal-fired plant in all of Spain. Viesgo recently commissioned a major investment at this plant, namely a new NOx abatement process that will slash emissions by 60%.

Puente Nuevo

Puente Nuevo

This plant is located in the province of Cordoba and has installed capacity of 324 MW. Recent investments have made this facility more environmentally friendly and introduced desulphurisation technology.
